How Sperm of Smoker Damages The DNA of Their Offspring

There are always consequences for every action or inaction. Smoking Cigarettes and other substances also come with varying degrees of consequences that very often are injurious not just to the perpetrators of the act but also to their offspring.

This article is to show how the sperm DNA damage of male smokers impact negatively on their offspring.

The sperm of men who smokes has greater extent of DNA damage than that of non-smokers, says a new study that points out the harmful effects of smoking on male fertility.

Male infertility accounts for about 30-50 percent of all infertility cases, and infertile men tend to have high levels of damage to the sperm DNA.

"Our results point in the direction of important semen alterations. Semen of smokers presents an inflammatory nature, associated with decreased capacity of sperm to achieve fertilisation and generate a healthy pregnancy," Pimenta Bartilla noted.

In the study, 20 non-smoking men and 20 men who smoke were studied. 422 proteins in the participants ’' sperm were also assessed. The analysis revealed that 1 protein was absent, 27 proteins were underrepresented, and 6 proteins were over-represented in smokers.

Analysis of these proteins suggests that cigarette smoking may promote an inflammatory response in the male reproductive tract.

The study which was published in the journal BJU International revealed according to Pimenta Bertola that that, sperm DNA fragmentation was increased.

Other studies have proposed this to be a potentially promutagenic effect which is to say that sperm with altered DNA may lead to health problems in the offspring."

More research needs to be done in this area. And the scope should be widening to accommodate appreciable number of participants.
